How to Treat an Eye Infection in a Kitten

When our little Dusty was born, we noticed a problem with one of his eyes within the first few days. His eye kept watering and then in the morning, he would wake up with his eye matted closed and crusted over.

I’ve had eye infections before, but wasn’t sure exactly how to treat an eye infection in a kitten, especially one so young, so I started doing research online and I found this video from Kitten Lady.

This kittens eye infection was clearly more serious than that our little guy’s, so we were really glad to find this video early on, and treat the infection before it worsened.

How to Treat an Eye Infection in a Kitten

We followed Kitten Lady’s simple instructions.  Here they are, step-by-step:

  1. Buy Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment (You can purchase this over-the-counter at your local Tractor Supply Co. or online via Amazon.com).
  2. Use a warm washcloth to soften the mucus around their eye and clean away any crust or debris.
  3. Make sure you treat both eyes, even if you only see an infection in one eye.
  4. Apply Terramycin to each eye with a Q-Tip or clean finger.  Gently help the kitten to blink each eye to work the medicine into their eye.
  5. Repeat the treatment frequently.  The Terramycin box recommends about 4 times per day.

QUICK TIP: If your kitten is struggling and isn’t able to hold still long enough for you apply the treatment, try swaddling her/him in a blanket, towel or washcloth.  We did this and it made the process so much easier (see above image).

We treated our kitten with these five steps and his eye infection cleared up in just a few days.  After stopping the treatment, we did see it start to come back a little, with his eye getting watery and crusty again.  We simply started the treatment again, and continued for another few days, treating him with a warm compress and Terramycin ointment 3-4 times per day.

Keep in mind that you may have to treat the other cats or dogs in your home if they spread the infection while playing or being in contact with each other.  So make sure that you’re checking daily to be sure everyone’s eyes are clear.

Where to Get Terramycin Over-the-Counter

Now that I know about Terramycin, I’ll be keeping a tube of this liquid gold in my home at all times.  Eye infections are scary and uncomfortable for pets, especially cats, who jump and climb, and rely heavily on their depth perception.

You don’t need a prescription for Terramycin and can purchase it over-the-counter at your local Tractor Supply Co. or online via Amazon.com.

If Terramycin doesn’t work to clear up your kitten’s infection or if symptoms worsen, you may need to visit a vet.

Below are some more serious symptoms to watch for.

When to Visit the Vet

  1. If your kitten has severe inflammation, if you can see the conjunctiva or if they eye looks like it might be permanently damaged.
  2. If your kitten is showing other signs of a respiratory infection, such as sneezing, runny nose or wheezing.

If you have questions or concerns about your kitten’s symptoms, don’t be afraid to call or visit a vet in your area and get the help you need.  There are also tons of free services and apps where you can ask questions about your pet 24/7.  Check out these great resources for free vet advice.
